Environmental Hygiene and Healthy Housing Serve as the First Line of Defense Against TB Transmission

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterial infection spread through the air via respiratory droplets. According to 2024 data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesia accounts for approximately 10 percent of global TB cases, with an estimated 1.08 million cases and 126,000 deaths.

As part of TB control efforts, the government supports providing healthy housing for TB patients. As reported by Antara, the government plans to renovate 8,000 homes of TB patients from low-income families—specifically deciles 1 through 4—in priority regions with a high disease burden.

TB prevention involves reducing bacterial exposure through healthy lifestyles and clean environments. A clean environment also lowers the risk of reinfection in recovered patients. Successful prevention requires synergy among the central government, local governments, and the public.

Good sanitation, clean water, and covered waste disposal help prevent secondary infections that can weaken the immune system. Additionally, routinely dusting and cleaning furniture helps minimize bacterial exposure indoors.

Damp and enclosed spaces increase the risk of transmission. Therefore, adequate ventilation is essential to ensure proper airflow and clear out bacteria-carrying particles.

Sunlight is key. Direct exposure to UV rays effectively kills TB bacteria in the air as well as on household items.

To prevent relapse and break the chain of TB transmission, patients must complete their full course of medication, practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette by covering their mouth, and avoid indoor pollution and tobacco smoke. Furthermore, always wear a mask, especially when near someone with TB.
