Synergy Between the Depapre District Government and Community Health Cadres in Accelerating Malaria Elimination

MALARIA PERDHAKI-JAYAPURA. Depapre District is known as a coastal area of Jayapura Regency with promising tourism potential. However, behind its beauty, Depapre faces a major challenge in the form of a high risk of malaria transmission due to dynamic population mobility. Recognizing this, a strategic step was taken through a malaria cadre monitoring and evaluation activity organized by SSR YAPUKEPA 2, held on April 23, 2026, at the Depapre District Hall as a concrete effort to accelerate malaria elimination.

During the activity, the Head of Depapre District, Alfa Tamaela, expressed deep appreciation and pride upon seeing that the frontline of healthcare in his area is dominated by resilient “mama-mama” figures. He was highly impressed that amid their responsibilities in managing households, these women are still able to dedicate their time and energy to safeguarding community health in the villages of Depapre and Yokari Districts. The presence of these cadres, fully supported by Malaria Perdhaki and the Health Office, is a valuable asset that brings new hope for improving the quality of life of communities in Papua.

Going forward, the cadres are expected to uphold integrity by providing honest reports that reflect actual field conditions, as such data will serve as a crucial basis for government decision-making. As a form of concrete support, the district authorities will also direct village heads to be more proactive in maintaining environmental cleanliness as a primary prevention measure. Although budget adjustments are currently taking place, the spirit of the cadres is expected to remain strong, as this work represents a noble form of service carried out wholeheartedly for the safety of their families and neighbors in their own villages.

If cadres encounter emotional resistance from residents while carrying out their duties, their approach must remain persuasive and humane, involving village heads as a bridge for communication. If the community is still unwilling, malaria cadres should not force the situation. By maintaining good relationships, there remains a possibility that the cadres can provide education to these residents in the future.

Ultimately, cadres must take pride in their role, as every step they take represents a meaningful struggle toward a greater vision: achieving malaria-free villages for a healthier and more prosperous future generation.
