High Case Numbers Persist, Yapen Regency Government Supports Malaria Cadre Training

MALARIA PERDHAKI – JAKARTA. The Yapen Regency Government supports Malaria Perdhaki’s commitment to malaria elimination through its malaria cadre training program.

This training program involves the Yapen Islands District Health Office, PR Perdhaki, SR Primari, SSR Paroki Bunda Maria Serui, and SSR Trapesia Yapen. The activity takes place from 25–29 November 2025 at Maureen Hotel, Serui.

The Head of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Yapen Islands District Health Office, Franklin Mekari Numberi, stated that malaria cases in the region remain relatively high.

“The training of Village Malaria Workers, involving community health centers (Puskesmas) and PR–SR–SSR Malaria Perdhaki, is essential to reduce illness and deaths caused by malaria,” said Franklin during the opening of the Malaria Cadre Training on Tuesday (25/11).

Representing the Head of the Yapen Islands District Health Office, Karolis Tanawi, Franklin added that in 2024 the number of malaria cases in Yapen Islands reached 389 cases per 1,000 population.

The presence of malaria cadres is expected to support education and health services related to malaria in the region.

Meanwhile, the Program Manager of Sub-Sub Recipient Bunda Maria Serui (SSR BMS), Anthonius Kareba, explained that the goal of the malaria cadre training is to improve the cadres’ ability to conduct early examinations, provide medication, and monitor treatment adherence in the community.

This commitment also reflects Malaria Perdhaki’s support for local government policies to prevent and control malaria.

“The training of village malaria workers is part of an empowerment process to create skilled and reliable malaria cadres who will serve as the front line in the fight for malaria-free villages,” said Anthonius.

In this Malaria Cadre Training Program, 30 prospective cadres and 2 cadre assistants are participating. They consist of: 5 cadres from Serui Kota Health Center, 4 from Kosiwo Health Center, 4 from Warari Health Center, 4 cadres and 1 assistant from Ansus Health Center, 3 from Menawi Health Center, 4 from Mumbeai Health Center, and 6 cadres plus 1 assistant from Dawai Health Center.

“Throughout the training, participants will receive various materials related to technical knowledge on malaria examination and treatment, self-development, as well as proper documentation and reporting,” Anthonius concluded.
