Program Malaria Perdhaki

MALARIA PERDHAKI, Jakarta – The activity was conducted by SSR Yapukepa 2 from June 21 to 25, 2022, and took place at five different Community-Based Health Efforts (UKBM) locations: Kuipons Village, Tabri Subdistrict, Imsar Village, Pobaim Village, and Kaitemung Village in Jayapura Regency. The event was attended by various parties, including village leaders and officials, health sector stakeholders, and local government representatives.

The general objectives of this activity include increasing community awareness in the villages about the importance of their role in collectively supporting the malaria elimination program. The issue of malaria is not solely the responsibility of the government or healthcare workers, but also requires active participation from the community to help the government and healthcare workers together prevent and control the spread of malaria in their areas.

The specific objective of this activity is to bring together village leaders and heads of local villages to sit with government representatives from Jayapura Regency, including district-level officials and the Community and Village Empowerment Agency (DPMK) of Jayapura Regency. They engage in a discussion (sharing session) about the performance and presence of the UKBM malaria cadres in the field. If the presence of the cadres has a positive impact, they discuss what forms of assistance the villages can provide as appreciation for the UKBM Perdhaki malaria cadres working in collaboration with the local health centers.

In addition, through this participatory activity—following monitoring and evaluation conducted in the field by SSR Yapukepa 2 along with PJ Malaria/FF and Malaria Cadres—it was found that the availability of bathroom/latrine facilities (MCK) in several households is still lacking. Therefore, during this activity, it was discussed with high hopes that the village government can assist and provide support in budgeting and planning the development of these facilities to help prevent and control the spread of malaria in their respective villages.

The outcome of this meeting, aimed at ensuring that the discussion (sharing session) goes beyond just talk and can be realized in action, was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the end of the event held in Kampung Pobaim. The MoU was signed by the Head of DPMK Jayapura Regency, the Head of Nimboran District, the Village Heads and the Village Chief from Nimboran District, and representatives from Perdhaki (PM SSR Yapukepa 2, FF, and CSO).

It should also be noted that last year, this participatory activity was previously conducted by Perdhaki (SSR Yapukepa 2), which successfully reached an agreement on village support in the form of incentives for malaria cadres as a positive response and support from the village for the presence of these malaria cadres. This activity is part of the Village Socialization program, which aims not only to socialize the implementation of the malaria program but also to build cooperation among various stakeholders so that both the PERDHAKI malaria program and local policies and budgets align to support the acceleration of malaria elimination.

SSR Yapukepa 2 operates under the Sub Recipient of Perdhaki in the Jayapura I Diocese Region (SR PWK Jayapura I). PERDHAKI (Persatuan Karya Dharma Kesehatan Indonesia) is a non-profit health service association entrusted by the government as a partner in malaria eradication efforts in Eastern Indonesia. Although rooted in the Catholic faith and spread across Indonesia, Perdhaki provides services to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion.
