Looking at Housing Conditions in Papua That Increase the Risk of Malaria Transmission

Based on data collected by Vector Cadres from April to June 2026, the physical condition of community housing in Papua is generally not yet adequately protected against mosquito exposure. More than half of the ventilation openings in homes were found to be without mosquito screens, while more than 30 percent of windows were not properly sealed. In addition, around 30 percent of homes still had open gaps in their walls and floors, leaving residents inadequately protected from mosquito bites.

Another risk factor that warrants attention is the location of sanitation facilities. Although around 70 percent of households already have bathrooms or toilets inside their homes, the remainder still rely on sanitation facilities located outside the house. The need for residents to access and travel to outdoor toilets at night increases their risk of exposure to bites from Anopheles mosquitoes. Anopheles.

In addition to structural factors, the environment surrounding homes also contributes to the increased risk of transmission. The data show that more than half of the ponds around residential areas serve as breeding sites for Anopheles mosquito larvae. Similarly, nearly half of the small, shallow, and clear-water pools found in the surrounding environment were also identified as potential breeding sites. The presence of livestock pens attached to or located close to homes, combined with dense vegetation and bushes, further expands the areas where mosquitoes can rest and breed. Anopheles. The health challenges posed by the physical condition of homes and their surrounding environment can, in fact, be addressed. This is where malaria cadres and health workers play a crucial role in continuously educating communities and raising awareness of these risks. Many preventive measures can be taken directly by homeowners, such as installing mosquito screens, sealing gaps in buildings, clearing standing water, and trimming dense vegetation to reduce the risk of transmission.

Education is also needed on the importance of personal protection against mosquito bites, including the use of mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, insect-repellent creams, and covering up with appropriate clothing at night. When practiced consistently and repeatedly every day, these behaviors are expected to become habits that people adopt automatically, without having to give them much thought.

However, larger-scale risk factors, such as the presence of lakes or rivers that serve as mosquito breeding sites, cannot be addressed by individuals alone. Cross-sectoral collaboration and the involvement of various stakeholders are needed to comprehensively and sustainably control mosquito larvae populations, for example through larvicide application.
