Synergy on World Malaria Day: A Collaborative Dialogue Between Government, Medical Personnel, and Community Health Workers for a Healthy Manokwari

MALARIA PERDHAKI-MANOKWARI.

In Manokwari Regency, this spirit is growing stronger alongside the local government’s target to achieve Malaria Elimination status by 2027. This ambitious goal requires collective hard work, from strategic government policies to concrete actions by frontline workers at the grassroots level.

As part of the 2026 World Malaria Day commemoration series, RRI Manokwari organized an Interactive Dialogue that served as a platform for frontline actors. The main speaker was Anita Wasiani, a malaria community health worker who has dedicated herself to the coastal area of Bakaro Village. Anita shared her perspective alongside two other competent speakers: Frans Abidondifu, Head of the P2P Division of the West Papua Provincial Health Office, and Fany Oktarina, an internal medicine specialist.

The one-hour broadcast from RRI Pro 1 Manokwari carried a crucial theme, “Protect West Papua from Malaria, Starting from Home.” The main focus of the discussion was to emphasize that the most effective protection must begin within the smallest unit—the household.

The speakers stressed that to achieve healthy families and a clean environment, communities must be disciplined in implementing preventive measures, such as sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets, maintaining proper sanitation around their homes, and ensuring that all water containers are tightly covered to prevent mosquito breeding.

The success of this program heavily depends on the dedication of community health workers who apply a proactive outreach system, as demonstrated by malaria cadres in Bakaro Village with full support from SSR PTPS. They actively conduct home visits and perform independent blood testing using Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits. When a positive case is detected, cadres not only provide medication according to medical standards but also play a vital role in monitoring patients’ adherence to treatment until completion. This close supervision is essential to ensure full recovery and prevent the emergence of new cases. Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).

Ultimately, the role of malaria cadres like Anita Wasiani is a key indicator of success in local prevention efforts. With the Manokwari Regency Government’s commitment to achieving elimination by 2027, synergy between community workers, healthcare professionals, and the public becomes the main key. Through strong collaboration, we remain optimistic about realizing healthy families, clean environments, and a shared vision: a malaria-free West Papua.
