Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS (<em>Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome<\/em>), a stage where the immune system becomes severely weakened and the body highly vulnerable to various diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that with early diagnosis and proper treatment, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives. Early detection is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early stage, which is around 2 to 4 weeks after exposure, some people experience no symptoms at all. Others experience flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, rash, sore throat, muscle aches, or swollen lymph nodes. Persistent fatigue may also occur, even with sufficient rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, people living with HIV have no symptoms for years. After initial symptoms subside, the virus remains active and gradually weakens the immune system. Because they appear healthy, many people do not realize they are infected and unintentionally transmit it to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In later stages, as the immune system weakens further, symptoms begin to appear, such as unexplained weight loss, recurrent fevers, prolonged diarrhea, a persistent cough, swollen lymph nodes, and recurring mouth sores or thrush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this stage, people with HIV are at risk of developing serious conditions such as tuberculosis (TB), cryptococcal meningitis, severe bacterial infections, and cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that these symptoms can also occur with many other illnesses, and having no symptoms does not mean you are HIV-free. The only way to confirm your HIV status is through testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HIV testing is recommended for anyone who is or has been sexually active, and should be repeated regularly if engaging in high-risk behaviors. Screening is strongly advised for individuals with multiple sexual partners or those who engage in unprotected sex, people who share needles, individuals with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnant women (to prevent transmission to the baby), and patients with TB, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that testing too soon after exposure can yield a negative result, as the body has not yet produced enough antibodies to detect the virus. Therefore, retesting is necessary a few weeks later, as advised by a healthcare professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a potential exposure occurred recently, such as unprotected sex or an accidental needle stick, go to a healthcare facility immediately. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) medication to prevent HIV is most effective when taken within the first 72 hours.<br><br>Today, effective medications and medical advancements are widely available to manage HIV. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) suppresses the viral load and keeps the immune system strong, preventing the condition from progressing to AIDS. People with HIV who adhere to ART regularly can achieve an undetectable viral load, making the virus untransmittable through sexual contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delayed diagnosis can make treatment more difficult and significantly increase healthcare costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HIV testing is available at community health centers (puskesmas) and hospitals, offering voluntary and confidential pre- and post-test counseling.
