MALARIA PERDHAKI-MIMIKA. To support the acceleration of malaria elimination in Mimika Regency, the Indonesian Catholic Health Work Association (PERDHAKI), through its Sub-Sub Recipient (SSR) Santo Petrus SP3 and in collaboration with the Kokonao Health Center, conducted Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) activities on the performance of malaria cadres in Mimika Barat District, Kokonao, on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

This activity aims to evaluate the achievements of malaria cadres in Kokonao village, identify field challenges, and strengthen coordination between cadres, the health center, the Health Office, and the SSR to accelerate malaria elimination efforts in Mimika Regency.

The Program Manager of SSR Santo Petrus SP3, Veronika Teturan, told TelukPapua.com in Kokonao on Thursday, November 6, 2025, that Monev activities serve as an important platform to maintain the motivation and quality of work of malaria cadres in the field.

"Through monthly Monev, we hope to further encourage cadres to serve the community, whether through home visits, examinations, medication monitoring, bed-net usage, or health education," she said.

She further emphasized the importance of activity documentation and data validity by the cadres.

“In addition, we expect cadres to document all field activities and accurately record data on identified malaria cases so that the accompanying staff can input them into the E-Sismal system,” she continued.

Meanwhile, one of the malaria cadres from Kokonao, Agus Wisiro, shared several challenges frequently encountered during home-to-home malaria screening.

“Our challenges in the field depend on the people at home. Sometimes they refuse to be examined. Usually, we visit a day before to inform them about the malaria screening. If they agree, we can come back. But if not, sometimes we find no one at home. This has been our obstacle so far,” he said.

According to Agus, the most commonly detected malaria types are mixed malaria and malaria tertiana.

“This disease affects people regardless of age, from children to adults. But most cases are found in children. They are often reluctant or afraid to be examined. They usually go to the health center only when their condition becomes severe,” he added.

Agus emphasized that despite the many challenges, cadres continue striving to reach the community.

"We come not to frighten them but to help improve their health so they can recover quickly,” he said.

Another malaria cadre, Maria Tatake, expressed similar concerns, stating that some community members are still reluctant to receive examinations conducted by cadres.

“I often visit houses, but they refuse and say they don’t need to be checked. Sometimes they tell us to go to the health center instead. Yet we only want to help ensure they are healthy,” she added.
